March

Kyle Richardson May 3, 2020

Bit behind with updating these write-ups. It is currently May 3rd. Things have taken quite a turn since the beginning of the year. It seems now that the brain has shifted to the more day-to-day objectives versus tying my mind up with lofty summer goals. Don’t get me wrong…I am still dreaming.

I won’t dive into COVID-19 right now. There is just so much out there about it and honestly, it hasn’t changed my life dramatically. It feels weird to even say or think that, but I’m an introvert. I have been sort of social distancing since I can remember. Almost all my races that I have committed to this summer have been cancelled (minus the Rut in September). I’m cool with that. I sorta go back and forth with racing. My heart really belongs out rambling in the mountains all summer long.

February

Kyle Richardson March 15, 2020

Winter is in full effect. I am out seeking warmth even in the darkest and coldest days of the month. February felt like proper Winter here on the Front Range. In years past, I recall Winter being milder....or like last year, really digging in during March. Nevertheless, I had a very productive month out sliding on snow, getting up high, and even getting in some quality runs. The more time I spend engaging with Winter and its activities, the more I look forward to these precious peaceful months.

January

Kyle Richardson February 4, 2020

The beginning of a new year always provides a time to reflect and to look forward. It is in the dark days of winter that I dream of an endless summer. Although, as my skills as a mountain athlete continue to diversify and strengthen, I welcome the fluffy white stuff that falls from the sky. I grew up skiing but took a hiatus to pursue surfing on snow. It is only recently in the past three years that I have switched back to the sticks. Skiing has opened up my eyes to a new mode of travel in winter - especially the ability to still work on an aerobic base by incorporating uphill travel.

Fall, Fountain, Forever

Kyle Richardson November 12, 2019

Fall is the best time of the year to be in the Flatirons. All of the rocks are open for business (the birds have finished nesting), and the cooler temps of autumn are delightful after a hot summer on the slabs.

Everything about scrambling in the Flatirons touches a very primal feeling, there is something unique and special about moving fluidly over Fountain. It is just you and the environment, becoming one—blurring the lines between running and climbing.

This activity is the epitome of the word niche. The Flatirons are the perfect stage for the confluence of running and climbing. I'm not suggesting anyone should do anything that they aren't 100% comfortable with; climbing or scrambling without a rope has severe consequences. I've spent thousands of hours in the Flatirons, gaining the competency to feel solid on technical terrain.

I find myself at home in the mountains when I'm out pushing myself. My curiosity drives me to new places and that allows me to push up against the edge of what is possible. My motivation doesn’t stem from chasing records, it comes from connecting with the landscape.

It is about finding what ignites your soul—and chasing that feeling Forever.
